June 2014 - We landed in Bangkok on the day of the latest Coup d'etat

Although we missed Songkran..... we did make it for the latest Coup.....and Curfew!

I'm not sure we would have changed our plans if we knew about the most recent Army Coup d'etat, but it was strange to land in Bangkok the day of the Coup. The television stations were taken over by the military and played strange old music from the 1940's with a screen shot informing people about the coup. Most people went on with their lives as if nothing was happening, the only visible difference, besides the TV, was a nightly curfew for the first week, but restaurants and bars must have complained so much that the curfew was eventually lifted.

In some ways, the army coup is like a big government enema! The politicians get greedy and corrupt and somehow the pendulum wants to swing back to security, fairness, and justice, but the politicians, like in America have a tight grip that it's almost like a pressure release valve when the army kicks everyone out and restarts the government over again....not like communists or dictators, more like a mulligan do-over?
